A timeless movie which keeps you hooked on each and every word. It got me to write about it because it provided me with plenty of food for thought – how persistence and endurance can provide freedom and achieve wonders. How the illusion of freedom, even a glimpse of it, can move the inmates of prison and teach them to hope.
Andy Dufresne is convicted wrongly of murder of his wife and lover and given two life sentences. Therein begins his prison journey, a time of trial as well as of persistence and achievement.
Its a tale of consistent struggle and a creative genius who refuses to give up hope. He, a financial wizard carves a niche for himself even in a place like prison and becomes so irreplaceable that in spite of knowing about his innocence the warden refuses to do anything about it and kills his only hope, a witness to the actual murderer’s confession. Thereupon he escapes from prison after indefatigably working upon a tunnel for 19 years, wades through half a mile of filth before coming out clean , to freedom. He begins his revenge from the warden and his remuneration for all that time in the prison and a blissful sojourn at a place in the Pacific, devoid of all memories and carves out another life and another journey.
The message he gives his friend, Red, is to never give up hope and his promise from Red actually saves Red’s life and the two meet again.
Why I chose to write about one of the greatest hits of its time was because of the messages it gave me, that enthralled and motivated me, to store them in my memory and also for others to read and gain inspiration from.
One of the strongest message from the movie was:
“Hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And a good thing never dies.”
Sojourn in time 
Didn’t get a chance to read the novel but did view the movie. The movie kept me spell bound till the end. Have seen it multiple times and every time the excitement level was equally high. Going through the review made me re-live the moment. Such an interesting yet intricate plot of this great novel couldn’t have been penned down with such comprehensive excellence. Brevity at its best.
